New Years Eve 2006 - 2007

If You Missed This New Year’s Eve Event … You Missed A Great Time!
Once again we ushered in the New Year at the ADA dock in the Port of Everett.  We were fortunate to be between storm fronts, with no rain or wind and propane heaters served to minimize the chill. Food, as always, was plentiful and delicious.

A highlight of the evening was the surprise membership presentation to Randy and Julie Freeman of
Colorado.  Julie is the daughter of Tim and Jan Riddle.  Tim and Jan had begun planning this surprise last
summer and it went off without a hitch.  Now, Randy and Julie are
official members of MYC!

There were twelve boats end-tied to the dock:  Jim and Jolly Higman (Jibless), Tim and Jan Riddle (JJ), Dave and Laurie Green (Sea Wolf), Rick and Carol Megenity (Irish Mist), Bud and Mickie Wagner (Shawna Lynn), Enn and Cindy Mikk (Enn-Ticipation), Don and Lynne Dauenhauer (Double D), Roy and Mo Dorsey (Mo Nauti), Jim and Barbara Lamb (Minor Key), George and Christine DeWitt (Dragon's Edge), Tom and Bobbi O'Day (Ricochet), and Jeff and Char Anderson (Sol Mate).  A great sprinkling of other club members and friends came by to join in the celebration throughout the evening.

Meyers Café, currently under new ownership, was pleased to open New Year’s Day for our group. They did a fantastic job of keeping up with our crowd of 24+ people and the food was great!!!
Contributors to our prize drawing were: West Marine (a wonderful foul-weather jacket won by George Dewitt), Boaters World, Harbor
Marine, Everett Marine, Fisheries Supply, Bayside Marine, Popeye’s, Scuttlebutt Restaurant, Tim and Jan Riddle who donated a blanket, and Jim and Denise Griffing … a gift
certificate to the Seattle Aquarium.

Wishing MYC members a happy and safe 2007.

Dave and Laurie Green

Icicle Cruise - March 2-4, 2007

Technically speaking, this was the second cruise of the year ... the first being the trip back to your slips from the New Years Party. This was the first one to clear the marina and it was attended by two boats and six people.

As might be expected, both boats had some problems after a long winter letup and it took some extra time to get under way, but eventually we ended up in Shallow Bay / Sucia Island.

Petrolius Rex was crewed by Kipp and Babe Carroll and Roy and Mo Dorsey. The Daffodil Queen was crewed by Marty Eidbo and Ed Clauson (both of our wives had to work).
The weather was calm and dry with temperature a brisk 50 with lows in the 30’s at night. After our rendezvous we gathered for beverages on the Daffodil Queen and it was decided that we would pool our resources and have a dinner of Chili and Rib Steak. The steaks were deployed to the grills while the Chili was being warmed.

The men gathered on the aft decks and began discussing boats, etc. until the sun was down and it was dark. Only then did we decide to check on the steaks and to our surprise the steaks on one grill were burned and on the other grill they had been completely cremated leaving nothing but ash. Funny it didn’t seem like we talked that long! Nonetheless, we salvaged some parts of some of the steaks and enjoyed a great dinner to be followed on Petrolius Rex by a dessert of some of the best brownies ever.

Sunday morning we were treated to a fantastic breakfast of blueberry pancakes onboard Petrolius Rex and to a lively discussion by Babe Caroll of Bahamian Swimwear.

All in all a terrific shakedown to the upcoming season.

Marty Eidbo

Blake Island – April 13-15, 2007(A Spectacular Weekend!)

Our cruise started off with dire weather predictions of rain, clouds and wind, but despite the predictions three boats ventured out on what turned out to be a spectacular weekend. Cruise Captains Sean, Jennifer, Kaitlyn & Lucas Robinson along with Roy & Mo Dorsey and Dave & Laurie Green spent what ended up being a fun, and at some points, sunny weekend at Blake Island.

Crimson Pride (Robinsons) and Mo Nauti (Dorseys) arrived Friday afternoon despite some wind and rain. Our small group enjoyed appetizers and drinks followed by dinner on board Crimson Pride. It was cold and rainy outside, but good conversation, lots of laughter and Sean’s new heater kept us all plenty warm inside.

Saturday morning we woke up to grey, but dry skies. After muffins and coffee, the group headed out on a walk to explore the island. After following the Nature Trail and learning about the various trees and plants on the island, we hit another trail to do some Geocaching. With our GPS in hand we followed the trail and after a little searching found our “treasure.” By the time we arrived back at our boats, the sun was out and we were all hungry for lunch.

After lunch the rains hit and Sea Wolf (Green’s) arrived. Luckily the skies quickly cleared and we enjoyed evening drinks and appetizers in the sunshine on the dock. For dinner we moved to one of the island’s BBQ shelters where Dave, our resident fireman, built a great fire that we used to stay warm. For dinner we enjoyed cedar smoked salmon, salad and pasta salad along with more laughter and fun conversation.

Sunday morning we woke to sunny skies and calm waters. We also discovered a coffee shop at the village that makes good mochas, lattes and yummy waffles! A fun weekend was had by all and yet again we were thankful that our local weathermen often get it wrong!

Port Ludlow – June 22-24

The Port Ludlow Cruise which was hosted by our illustrious Vice Commodore and Cruise Captains, Roy and Mo Dorsey, lived up to what was billed as having a great time. We had ten boats show up for the cruise ... The Dorseys and Koa on “MoNauti”, the Dauenhauers on “Double D”, the Riddles on “JJ” , Dave Green on the “Sea Wolf” (Laurie was under the weather), the DeWitts on “Dragons Edge”, the Griffings and Jack on “Island Spirit”, the Wagners on “Shawna Lynn”, the Rubys on “Morning Mist”, the Megenitys on “Irish Mist”, the Crowleys on “Papa’s Boat” and the Siewerts on “Alison” (New Members Johan and Faith Siewert).

The Port Ludlow cruise was a great start, although it began with just a slight hiccup. We were beginning the first leg of the cruise joining Jim and Jolly Higman to Port Ludlow when the “Jibless” decided it did not want to fully cooperate (electronics). Everything turned out great when another boater (who Jim knew) assisted Jim and Jolly in pulling the “Jibless” off the rocks next to the Coast Guard Cutter on the south bank of the river. Everyone, including the “Jibless was safe, but understandably nervous. The Higmans were joined by a few of the Navy’s finest (security). As I understand, keeping the retired Army in check! The “Jibless” was towed to the guest dock, where we stayed with Jim and Jolly until the “Jibless” and the Higmans were returned safely to their slip. Hey Jim!!! That was a hell of a way to bring in your Birthday. “Happy Birthday from us all” and we are happy to report at this time, everything appears to be fine with the “Jibless”.

During our rendezvous at Port Ludlow, a few of us decided to continue with a little “Spring Cleaning”. Somehow (?), Roy’s boat brush ended up on the bottom of the drink! Well the club gets another donation from Tim Riddle! Thanks to Don Dauenhauer, Roy was happy to see his brush once again. We had a great “What’s for Dinner” on Friday night. A few of the members decided not to chance the culinary experience of the “Unknown” and choose to dine out. Their finer pallets prevailed. Saturday began the day with breakfast desserts, followed by numerous snacks throughout the day. The Higmans were able to join us in Port Ludlow for what was to be billed as the talented and challenging “Bocce Ball” tournament, which I might add was enjoyed by all, participants and spectators alike. Mo Dorsey and her partner Jim Griffing shared the honors as winners of the tournament.

I can say everyone who joined us for the Saturday night Salmon and pot luck dinner, hosted by the Dorseys, truly enjoyed a culinary experience. Roy did an outstanding job with the salmon. Who is the real chef in the Dorsey household? Tim enjoyed a German delight, the famous Weiner Dog ... better know as the all American hot dog. To top off the evenings culinary event, we all joined in celebrating Jim’s birthday with Carrot Cake and the traditional birthday song, sung by all. After our great salmon dinner we joined the “Islander Boat Club” for a gathering of warm fire, social interaction and “S’mores”

Poulsbo July 6-8, 2007

We had 14 boats join us in Poulsbo. It was a weekend of firsts: Mandy docked for the first time and gave her first speech in public (it’s amazing what a few drinks will do).

The ride over was a little windy. We arrived fashionably late, losing our burgee, a fender, and almost a dinghy. The rest of the weekend was beautiful and sunny.

On Friday night everybody met at the Bayside Broiler and enjoyed each others company and some good food.
A few of us painted ceramics on Saturday morning. Most everyone enjoyed the town’s many shops while some worked on boat projects.

We enjoyed a game of croquet Saturday afternoon … thank you Doug for explaining the rules. It was a very fierce competition with our champions being Sean Robinson and Ted Udhus (how did that happen????)

Saturday evening everybody met up in the recreation room for a potluck. We had a lot of food; everything from Spaghetti Bolognese, Kentucky Fried Chicken to smoked salmon. It was quite the feast.

Whilst we were enjoying our feast, the Reilly’s secretly decorated ‘Mo Nauti” with balloons and banners to celebrate Mo’s 50th birthday. ‘That’s right, Mo turned 50 … the big 50’. We enjoyed chocolate cake and celebrated Mo’s birthday on the dock and Mo was quite the birthday princess. Even getting hugs from strange young men... Happy Birthday Mo.

I know that I had a good time on the cruise; I hope all of you that went did too. Thank you all.

Looking forwards to next year,

Mandy and Ted Udhus

Slow Boat to Oak Harbor July 27-29, 2007

Now we are going somewhere! Our destination … Oak Harbor Marina
July 27, 2007. Higmans and cruising guest, Nancy had a late start – dinghy repairs. Arrived in Oak Harbor to find out that the hoped for race week early departures didn’t, so we joined the Andersons and Riddles on the hook out in the bay for the night. Saturday morning we all moved to our reserved spaces. We expected 11 boats. With the arrival of the Wagners and the Mikks Saturday morning we were 5 boats. Piispanens arrived by motor home and the Drapers drove in for the day.
The Higmans became a clan with the arrival of Kim, Keith and Sue and five grandchildren.
Saturday afternoon, Lois Piispanen taught a craft class (building neat photo albums). Experimental water balloon baseball spiced up the cocktail hour preceding an outstanding potluck supper of ham, assorted
potato dishes, and awesome salads and bread.
Then the winds blew! All five boats decided it was best to extend through Sunday night. Monday morning, the Riddles and Andersons braved the return to Everett – reporting calm seas and “no wind” outside of Oak Harbor! The three remaining boats decided to stay through Monday night.
On a pleasant, but breezy, Monday afternoon we boarded a bus for a picturesque ride into Coupeville. Lunch and a leisurely stroll around the waterfront area completed the outing.
Winds blew Tuesday morning, but as before, it was calm seas once outside of Oak Harbor.

Hunter Bay August 3-5, 2007

The Hunter Bay Cruise to Lopez Island on August 3-5 enjoyed warm sunny weather for one of MYC’s few “anchor-out” cruises. Eight boats arrived Friday afternoon, and crab pots were deployed immediately. Crabbing was excellent, with plenty of candidates for Saturday’s Second Annual MYC Crab Race.

Ten entrants made up the field, competing in five elimination “heats,” which culminated in the final championship race. All participants named their entries, clearly demonstrating the clever humor of the MYC members. Racers included Sneak Attack (Eidbo), Slow Mo (Dorsey), Zorro (Denton), Craboleus Rex (Carroll), Olav (Eidbo), Pinkie Crab (Robinson), Buster Crab II (Dauenhauer), Crabby Crab (Lamb), Rocker (Crowley) and Crab Lewis (wildcard). Crabby Crab was the 2007 overall champion, soundly trouncing Sneak Attack in the finals. Pinkie Crab was the undisputed winner of the “Best Decorated” prize, due to Kaitlyn’s inventiveness (and Sean’s deft crab handling).

After the crab races, two person dinghy teams competed in the Balloon-with-Deck Brush event, a challenging race in which a water balloon must be coaxed around a short course with a deck brush. A lottery ensured that the male/female teams were not comprised of spouses, to avoid long term damage. The team of Jennifer Robinson and Matt (a guest of the Eidbos) finished first in the raucous race. Warm sunny weather contributed to the circus atmosphere of this event, which, as usual, degenerated into a water fight with some truly impressive squirt guns.

Saturday evening, an excellent dinner began on one raft of boats with hors d’oeurves and the main courses, which oddly enough were dominated by crab dishes. The day concluded with a selection of desserts on the second raft of boats.

Thanks to all who attended for contributing the excellent dishes, and making the weekend lots of fun for everyone.

Genoa Bay ... Canadian Paradise - August 10-12, 2007

Teri and I pulled into Sidney to clear Customs and headed for Genoa Bay and a broken cloudy day. The sun was waiting for us as we pulled into our moorage by the Genoa Bay store. Waiting to tie us up were the Higmans, Wagners and Mikks. The Meekers and Eidbos arrived later that day. That night we enjoyed snacks on the dock and told stories about each other until bed time.

Friday morning found the golfing foursome of Mickie and Bud Wagner, Enn Mikk and Clay Meeker heading to the golf course with caddie Don (me) to clean their clubs and keep an honest score. Clay gave Mickie a new name, “Steady Eddie”. With tails tucked between their legs, all three men bowed to STEADY for her great play.

Tony and Lee Gobernatz and Bobbi and Tom O’Day joined us on Friday afternoon and Friday night we enjoyed another get together on the dock with everyone sharing hors d’ oeuvres. We had a total of nine boats from MYC (Shawna Lynn,
Enn-Ticipation, Jibless, YEAH!,
Western Red, Daffodil Queen, Laurie Lea, Seawatch V, Riccochet) and a great gathering for Bobbi O'Day’s birthday party. (39th this writer thinks.)

Brian & Beverly Lueth and their three kids pulled in late, but just in time to enjoy some cake sent down from Ben (Chief at Genoa Café) with sparklers and candles.

Saturday found eight teams of jocks ready to do battle at Captain Morgans in a nail biting game of Bocce ball. To help keep this report from being X rated, I will only say the Lueth (Green) team of mother and son were our champions, winning a dinner ticket to the Genoa Bay Cafe and the team (Red) and owner and captain of the good ship Yeah! received the award for second place.
Saturday night we had eighteen members for dinner at the Genoa Bay Cafe and what a wonderful dinner and sharing of friendship we all had.

Sunday found boats heading all points East, North and South and home. The trip home for Teri and I plus our new pup (BOO) took 5 and 1/2 hours. The water was great and that  wrapped up a wonderful cruise to our number one spot … Genoa Bay, Canada.

Lake Washington August 24-26, 2007

Friday, August 24th was the date we looked forward to all year. It was the annual Lake Washington Cruise. We arrived in Breaking Wind at 2:00 and set anchor in Andrews Bay with sunny skies and 75 degree water. I knew good times were here. How much better could it get, I wondered, as we sat in a really neat bay in the greatest region in the country waiting for the first of our pals to show up. At 4:30 Zenith with Alex and Mary and 2 of their cool cats showed up. By 8:00 Don and Lynne in Double D with Kipp and Babe on board, Koa, Maureen and Roy in Mo-Nauti, Tim and Jan in JJ, and Mike Reilly in Sub Sinker . Everyone reported a great cruise over.

Saturday was a bit cloudy and 61 degrees. At 11:00 we welcomed the Griffing family on board Island Spirit.

After a few cans of courage, Mike was the first to take the plunge into Lake Washington followed by most of us. Mike picked up Connie from shore to join in the fun. Because it was cloudy we found no turtles, making a liar out of me to Tim. Perhaps next year he'll believe we have turtles and lots of them.

The famous paper plate sail boat race was a hoot. Alex built a fine craft that won by a land slide. Roy attempted to use a remote control boat that his son Mike gave him. Although not clearly cheating, he ended up crashing the boat and never finished the race.

This year you could win by just participating and those who did received a bottle of the finest "house wine" we could find. I think Mike’s son is 21... I hope...oh well.

Not disclosing her age, as you wouldn't believe me anyway, Babe was surprised with a birthday cake proving again how very cool and special MYC folks really are. Just rafting together at anchor is a terrific way to get to know folks better, so no more excuses, next year lets double the turnout to 14 boats.

Bellingham September 14-16, 2007

JoRoy Team Wins Frisbee Golf Tournament!

Another great cruise by MYC to Bellingham. On the guest dock were I2D2 with Iain Draper and his friend John and daughter Amy, MoNauti with Roy and Mo Dorsey, JJ with Tim and Jan Riddle, Jibless with Jim and Jolly Higman, Northwestern Girl with soon to be new member Ed Clausen, and Daffodil Queen with Marty and Wendy Eidbo.

The weather was cloudy in the morning and sunny and bright Friday and Saturday. Sunday proved to be overcast and a little rainy and windy for the trip back.

This year’s Frisbee Golf Tournament was won by Team JoRoy with Jolly Higman and Roy Dorsey posting an outstanding 45 for 18 holes.

We were joined for dinner Saturday night by land cruisers Kipp and Babe Carroll and Bruce Fabert and Sharon Brodniak. Bruce and Sharon are in imminent receipt of their new boat, a 37’ Bayliner. Congratulations – I know you’ve looked forward to this and so have we!

The trip back home was a little wet, and a little windy, but all in all a great weekend once again.

2nd Annual Langley Sail-In September 21-23, 2007

Good Wind, Friendly Competition, then ...

Despite cloudy skies and the threat of rain, 8 boats (4 sail & 4 power) made their way to Langley for the 2nd Langley Sail Regatta.

Friday the sun came out for our trip over and stayed through most of the happy hour up at the top of the dock when a squall came through.  We took cover under the awning provided by the Higmans and the Riddles put up an umbrella to provide more shelter for our potluck. As usual the food was delicious and plentiful. As a matter of fact we had so much food that Saturday we had a re-potluck lunch before the regatta.

The sail boaters (Dragons Edge, Esmeralda, Mariah & Minor Key) hosted the power boaters as crew for the regatta. This was a timed race starting at 1:30 pm and ending at 3:30 pm.

We started off with a good wind and some friendly competition, but then the wind died! I mean, died. It became a drifting match. Despite the lack of wind Dragons Edge followed by Minor Key, managed to ghost around the first mark. Dragons Edge, Chris & George Dewitt and crew, were declared the winners. The awards dinner was held Saturday night at the Dog House restaurant, with 22 people attending.

Sunday morning we had breakfast and conversation on the dock. Entertainment was provided by an unlucky sail boater (non MYC) who had gone aground and had to wait for the tide to come in. Dave Hintzman performed rescue duties by towing the disabled dinghy off the beach and back to the now floating sailboat.

A big thank you to Dave and Ardyth Hintzman for being the committee to time the boats and to all who participated.  Plans have already been made for next year - watch the club calendar for the date!

Cruise Captains
